TRAVEL DIARIES: MASAI MARA

Friday, April 10, 2015

Hello loves,

Today's post is more about travel and nature. It is meant to inspire your travel activities and to encourage my fellow Kenyans to travel more and discover places in their very own country.

It's all about the famous Masai Mara
I did feature my last trip to Amboseli here, here, here and here. Unlike the last time though I've decided to sub -divide my pictures into posts on wildlife, accommodation and my outfits so as to have more relatable topics for you.

Starting us off is the Wildlife. Masai Mara is best known for the wide range of animal species that co-exist there. The Mara has grassland, Savannah , forests and wetlands all of which support different animal species...for any adventure and travel lovers this means 'Cloud 9'.

You can visit Masai Mara anytime of the year and still get to see enough wildlife, but the best time is between July & November when the Wildebeest Migration takes place...too bad we didn't experience that.

Here are pictures on the wildlife we encountered while on a school trip  to Masai Mara last week, thanks to The Technical University of Kenya.

Do enjoy.

The roads might be a little tricky in the rainy season...a 4WD or a tour van is the best vehicle to use for a game drive though.

A herd of female Thomson's gazelles

A leopard tortoise. One of the small five animals, opposites of  the big five.

The Masai Giraffe
As the name suggests, it is found in this Eco-system. Its pattern is very random compared to the other two types of giraffes found in Kenya.

The vast Savannah.
Most of the grazers (zebras, antelopes, gazelles, wildebeests e.t.c) are found in plain sight.

Such a beautiful display of their co-existence.

A group of Southern ground horn bills.

A family of Elephants, and Zebras far beyond.

Hippos basking on the banks of Mara River.
This location is actually called Hippo Point, it's the best place to view them.

Hippos are not carnivorous but they can be very dangerous when threatened. Most encounters between hippos and humans are fatal.

We almost left Masai Mara without seeing any big cats. Luckily though, we managed to see these three (two lionesses and a cub) on our last day in the evening as they lurked in the grass...the camouflage is so uncanny.

Lastly, remember to catch a hot air balloon ride because the view is like none other. The best time is at dusk when the winds are in favor, and the animals are still in their feeding activities (especially the big cats).

I hope you are now more encouraged to take a few days off and head to Masai Mara for a Safari.

Look out for a post on Accommodation in Mara soon.

Have  a great weekend ahead.

Much love,

Linet
