MY SUMMER CHECKLIST

Majority of the pics in this post are not mine. I've collected them from several sources on the internet mainly Pinterest and Polyvore.

How have you been loves?

I hope you've had a great week since I last posted. Nairobi was quite caught up in the Obama Fever and with all sincerity it also got to me. All other factors held constant I had a very lazy weekend (the glass of wine, movies, stay in bed kind of weekend). That among other reasons is why I haven't posted in a while.

On today's post, I'll talk about my summer essentials. Now that July and the cold in Nairobi is almost over, it's time to switch your closet items and have some summer staples.

But first, let me talk about hair color. Madison Reed have quite the collection of colors to choose from. They have a checklist that allows you to choose the best hair color for you depending on your current hair condition.
Personally, I am a huge fan of Ombre hair, don't ask me why. It makes me wish I had longer hair. Sometime back I dyed my hair but didn't get the result's I'd wished for. I therefore decided to let my hair grow a little then dye it again on the ends to achieve the ombre effect. Am on the hunt for a good hair color that won't damage my hair as badly as the last one did. Now you know what my plans are for my hair this summer.

The question behind this post is: How do I prep for summer?
Below is my small checklist for summer.
  1. Wide brimmed Sunhat : What would summer be without a sunhat? I am very much attracted to straw hats. They are a classic summer sun-hat. However, there is a wide variety of other wide brimmed sun-hats out there. Get as many as you can, don't be caught off guard.
  2. Sandals : Sandals are always fun, playful and they go well with summer because they give room for your feet to breathe. Even better they look so good paired with summer dresses, especially maxis. A pair of knee-high gladiator sandals shines bright on my wish list for this summer. I hope to get a pair sooner than later. A nice pair of wedge sandals also comes in handy with summer outfits.
  3. Mani - Pedis : Obviously, there is no way you are going to rock sandals all summer with chipped nail color and badly groomed nails. For as long as I can remember, I've always done my nails through the entire process. As you can guess, there is absolutely nothing professional about it. But ever since I had my nails done by @StivMakeup am all for a good, soothing, refreshing Mani-pedi session....at least am warming up to the idea. The whole point though is to have bright colors on your nails, go as bold as you like.  I would highly recommend neon colors and prints/patterns. Also make sure that you have a cream for both your hands & feet to avoid cracked skin. I use essential oils (coconut, castor and olive oils) for my feet especially when am in sandals, and it's working well.
  4. Short dresses: This is my all time summer tradition. Summer for me means I can rock all my short dresses with asymmetric hems. They are so pretty, flattering and very feminine. What more could I want? For now though, am obsessed with Shirt dresses which I'll be styling on the blog soon.
  5. Sunglasses : In all honesty I think sunglasses are now a lifestyle. Find the perfect pair for yourself this summer and rock them with all your outfits. You need to protect your eyes from the harsh sun rays, make sure you look good while at it. My current obsession would be cat-eye sunglasses, and any sunglasses with a bright colored frame. Let your accessories make a statement.
  6. Bright colors: I have said this very often before ; I Love, Love , Love colors. As much as I'll play safe with my usual black neutrals, when the sun shines bright so will I. This outfit in the post today pretty much summarizes this. Be prepared to see bold colors and bright crazy prints as well. In this post I wore bright pastels and hints of brown & gold with the accessories.
  7. Sunscreen : Well. I won't even lie to you that I use sunscreen. But, I have been eyeing moms' Forever Living Sunscreen for a while now. It has been on my wishlist though it's always overtaken by shoes. I'll be sure to make it a priority this summer.
  8. Hair : As I said earlier, this summer I have every intention of getting Ombre hair. I hope it turns out well. I only do two things to my hair though, braid it or style it in a high bun. It would be really nice to have a new different style though......I have been considering the big chop for 1 year now....Clearly that ain't happening anytime soon. For now, Ombre hair will do the trick.....probably in black and blonde. (Not as extreme as the one below but you do get the what am aiming for)
  9. Accessories : Summer is the perfect time to go crazy with accessories since more often than not, you'll be exposing lots of skin. Here are some of my favorites.....though I end up making them half the time.
I would have included a swim suit in this list but unfortunately I can't swim......yes, I see all your eyes roll over and over again. That's just me. However, whether you'll be diving in for a swim or not, be sure to have the perfect swim wear this summer.

My ideal summer look is summarized in this outfit.

  23. Just curious why people write posts about ''summer is here'' while the weather in Kenya is almost summer through out the year.Aren't we getting a little more ''westernized?"(by that I mean writing content that is not relevant-for lack of a better word).. I live in a America but miss my home weather(Kenya) and I cannot begin to say how happy I get when it gets warmer here. That's not the case in Kenya.Just a thought, no ill intentions...Otherwise I think you look phenomenal!
